Joseph Banks was an English naturalist, botanist and patron of the natural sciences. He accompanied Captain Cook on his first voyage round the world from 1768 to 1771 and collected over 1300 species and flora. An illustrator, Sydney Parkinson, drew them life-size and captured them lusly life-like with an artist's eye and lucid observation.
